Winter Fun, Western Style

Red Lodge comes alive with one of the West’s most exhilarating traditions. Hosted by the Red Lodge Ski-Joring Association since 1980, this high-energy event blends Old West horsemanship with modern winter sport. Teams of horse, rider, and skier charge down a 700-plus-foot course, the horse and rider hugging the inside track while the skier in tow navigates more than 20 slalom gates and four jumps. With speeds reaching over 25 miles per hour, precision, teamwork, and grit are essential. Competitors aim for two fast, clean run. It’s a thrilling celebration of winter, Western heritage, and pure Montana excitement.
